NE 33rd Ave in Portland, OR, particularly the stretch north of Fremont Ave through the Wilshire Park crosswalk and especially between Bryce and Shaver, has become increasingly dangerous. Speeding drivers pose a significant threat to families, kids, walkers, bikers, and all residents. In the past few months alone, we've witnessed two major crashes right outside our homes. One of these accidents was severe enough that the SUV involved flipped onto its side. Miraculously, there were no serious injuries, but we fear the next incident could be devastating.

Our community is vibrant and full of life. Neighbors, children walking to school, families heading to Wilshire Park, and local residents should not live in fear of crossing the street or biking around their neighborhood. We all deserve to feel safe on our streets.

To address this growing concern, we demand the implementation of effective safety measures on NE 33rd Ave. Possible solutions could include installing speed bumps, increasing radar speed signs, enhancing crosswalk visibility with flashing lights, or adding more traffic enforcement. The primary goal is to slow down traffic and increase awareness among drivers about the residential nature of our neighborhood.

Our Alameda Neighborhood Association has agreed to help if we can show support for this cause.

According to the Portland Bureau of Transportation, speed is a critical factor in determining the severity of accidents. Reducing speeds by even a small margin can vastly improve survival rates and reduce injuries. By taking adequate measures to control traffic speed on this critical stretch, we can prevent future tragedies and make NE 33rd Ave safe for everyone.

The time to act is now, before more people get hurt. We urge the city of Portland to take these concerns seriously and prioritize the safety of its residents by implementing necessary traffic calming measures.
