Every woman in South Africa deserves to live in an environment where she feels safe and secure, particularly in places that are expected to offer protection—like public transportation, educational institutions, workplaces, and even law enforcement agencies. Unfortunately, the reality for many women in our country tells a different story: fear and anxiety often accompany them in these very spaces.

My heart breaks every time I hear another story of a friend or a stranger who wasn't able to reach home safely, or even worse, became a new statistic of gender-based violence. Our homes, schools, universities, streets, and public transit systems should be havens of safety, not places riddled with fear.

According to a report by Statistics South Africa, the country’s prevalence rate of sexual violence is alarmingly high, and each day many women experience harassment, assault, and discrimination. This has to change!

I urge the government and relevant authorities to implement stringent safety measures and policies aimed at reducing gender-based violence and improving security for women across South Africa. These measures can include:

1. **Increase Surveillance and Lighting:** Improve street lighting and surveillance in public areas, particularly around bus stops, parking lots, and campuses.

2. **More Police Presence:** Strategic placement of law enforcement officers at crucial areas where women are most vulnerable.

3. **Emergency Response Systems:** Establish easily accessible emergency systems where women can swiftly report incidents and receive immediate help.

4. **Educational Campaigns:** Introduce awareness campaigns that challenge societal norms and educate the public on women’s rights and safety.

5. **Support and Protection Centres:** More easily accessible support centers for victims of gender-based violence, providing psychological help and legal advice.

Every step taken towards these initiatives can immensely impact the lives of countless women, allowing them to reclaim spaces that rightfully belong to them, free of fear and anxiety.
