I have personally witnessed the pain and devastation that suicide attempts can bring. It's a subject very close to my heart, as I've had experiences with loved ones who have tried to take their own lives. This is why I am advocating for change at the Ximenes Avenue Garage at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The garage currently has open access points and roof access which can potentially be misused by individuals contemplating suicide. We need fencing installed around these openings and roof access cut off as preventive measures. These changes are not just about physical barriers; they are about sending a message that we care for our community and fellow roadrunners' well-being.

Suicide is a serious public health issue in the United States. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts in 2019 alone (source: AFSP). By implementing safety measures like fencing and restricting roof access at potential high-risk locations such as Ximenes Avenue garage, we could significantly reduce this number.

We cannot stand by while our community members suffer silently. Let us come together to make these necessary changes at Ximenes Avenue garage - because doing nothing won't fix what happens in the future.
