Implement Safer Speed Limits entering Oakura for Community's Safety
The Issue
As residents of Oakura, we live a peaceful life in our village. However, with the increased population and growth the current speed limits are causing distress and escalating safety issues, especially for our children accessing Corbett Park and crossing interstate 45 at the Wairau intersection. The current speed limits have previously led to numerous accidents and, tragically, even numerous casualties, hence this plea.
The needed safety adjustment requires reducing the speed limit to 50 km/h at the top of the hill before reaching Corbett Park on the North/East end of town coming from New Plymouth. Simultaneously, the speed limit should change from 100 to 50 km/h at least 200 m before reaching Wairou when entering the village from South or Okato.
For the last six months, I have been communicating with New Zealand transit authority, but because of real changes in the new government and perceived lack of interest by the community, They have denied any request to even review our current traffic situation. I have recently met with our MP David McLeod and the Kaitake community board to try and increase awareness to this issue. This petition is a tool to make everyone aware of the work I am trying to do and to try to solicit your support for this much needed change.
This change is important not only to prevent future accidents but also to ensure the security of our children and the overall safety of our community.
These may seem minor, but their impact will echo daily in the safety and well-being of all those who live, work and visit here. We ask everyone in our community and beyond to support us in our effort to uphold safety in Oakura. Please, sign the petition to call on our local and National leaders to amend the speed limits and create a safer Oakura for us all.
Please help me increase awareness and sign the petition. Please have your whole family sign it. Without a large amount of support, it will be very difficult to make the much needed changes. Also, if you can, please forward this to anybody you know that has a stake in making Oakura a safer place.
