Implement Safer Speed Limits and Strict Enforcements in Howell Township
The Issue
HI Howell Neighbor!
I am your neighbor on Aldrich Road. We moved here in 2016 and in those 8.5 years here the traffic has quadrupled on Aldrich Road. Aldrich Road has become a high-speed zone to the level that many are unable to pull out of the driveways, get mail or walk on the sidewalk safely. The volume of traffic on Aldrich is too high. There are many blind spots blocked by road inclines and hidden driveways. 90% of the drivers on Aldrich Road are traveling at 45-60mph. Even at 40mph that speed is too fast for our densely populated road. Several accidents have happened, telephone poles down, property damaged, school buses passed, and pets killed. We need to be able to cross the street safely without having to risk our lives.
On December 3rd, Just weeks before Christmas, our beloved one-year-old puppy was tragically taken from us, struck by a speeding vehicle right outside our home on Aldrich Road. She was a cherished family member who brought light into our lives every day. Imagine the sadness and horror holding your loved one lifeless in your arms? What would you do?
We need reduced speed limits in densely populated areas and on residential streets. Aldrich Road is a residential street! We're calling on local authorities to reduce the speed limits in these dense residential areas from their current level to a safer speed appropriate for areas with high pedestrian and pet activity. According to recent studies, reducing speed limits can greatly reduce the risk of fatalities and serious injuries. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports a 90% fatality rate for pedestrians struck by vehicles travelling at 40 mph as opposed to a 10% fatality rate at 20 mph.
1. This petition is to ask Howell township to lower speed limits on heavy or densely populated residential streets including Aldrich Road (between Windeler Rd & Route 9) to a 25 mph road. At 25 mph it would be safer for all residents, children and pets to travel by foot, bike or car. Changing the limit to 25 mph would require only 108 seconds more of travel on the 2 mile stretch from Windeler to Rt 9. .
2. To increase enforcement and have stricter penalties for those that violate speed limits. Strict enforcement measures need to be put in place for violators, including mandatory court appearances, to ensure these reduced speed limits are taken seriously. This is not just about changing numbers on a sign, it's about introducing a culture of responsibility and respect for all lives.
Safer speed limits may prevent another family from experiencing the same heartbreak of losing a family member. We invite all members of our community to get behind this important cause. Please, for the safety of our children, our pets, and all in our township, sign and share this petition.
