As a resident of Sugar Mill Apartments in Evansville, living across the street from Meijer, I witness daily how precarious crossing the street in our neighborhood is. Many residents, including senior citizens and parents with young children, risk their safety trying to navigate this bustling traffic zone. The road is wide and offers a terribly short window of just 10-15 seconds to make a quick dash across the street when the traffic clears.

The urgency of this issue was starkly highlighted when I, with my 8-month-old child in my arms, almost got hit by a truck while trying to cross the street to reach the urgent care inside of Meijer. Despite clearly seeing me holding an infant, the truck did not pause, rushing past as soon as the light turned green. This frightening near-miss experience has galvanized my resolve to address the issue of pedestrian safety in our neighborhood.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2018, 6,283 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States, marking the most deaths since 1990. This statistic emphasizes the fundamental importance of pedestrian safety measures in all areas, including here in Evansville. We need the implementation of a safe pedestrian crossing near the Sugar Mill Apartments to protect our neighbors, our children, our seniors - our community. Don’t let the numbers for this year include an elderly person just trying to get a few groceries from the store or a concerned mother with her 8 month old daughter just trying to get her medical help!
