The Issue

Waiyaki Way's infrastructure does not adequately prioritize the safety of pedestrians. The highway, which serves as a crucial part of Nairobi's commuter network, lacks sufficient pedestrian crossing points. This absence puts countless individuals who navigate this busy road on foot at risk daily, contributing to pedestrian accidents. According to a report by NTSA, 1591 of road traffic deaths in Kenya in 2023, involved pedestrians. A total of 4,324 fatalities were reported in the year. The lack of safe crossing points along Waiyaki Way not only endangers lives but also discourages walking, a sustainable mode of transport that reduces congestion and pollution. We urge the relevant authorities to promptly design and implement safe, designated pedestrian crossings along the stretch from ABC Place to University Way, along Waiyaki Way. The construction of the Expressway left pedestrians crossing dangerously at various points as they did not take into account the previous crossing points used by those commuting to and from work daily across Waiyaki Way.  It's time to prioritize pedestrian safety to secure our community's well-being. Act now, sign the petition.
