The realities of firearm death should touch each of us deeply. The #1 killer of children and teens in the United States is gun death. In Kansas, 69% of suicide cases are attributed to firearms, which is higher than the national average of 57% ranking Kansas 19th in the US. Experiencing such horrors prompts us to take action and call for change.

In the 2023 Kansas legislative session House Bill No. 2413, requiring safe and secure storage of firearms and Senate Bill No. 137 promoting responsible gun ownership through safe storage were introduced but never received a hearing. Coupled with criminal penalties for violations, those bills had the potential to stop accidents, intentional misuse and suicides. According to the Giffords Law Center, States with laws promoting safe storage and owner responsibility see lower rates of firearm injuries and deaths.

As Kansans, we know that with gun ownership comes great responsibility. Let's protect those we love, our neighbors, and each other, by making Kansas safer for all.
