Our dear friend, Larry Santarelli, loved riding his motorcycle! His life was tragically cut short when an inattentive driver failed to halt at a stop sign and hit him. In his honor, and to protect others who share his passion for the open road, we must take action to find reasonable solutions and increase road safety in the great State of Ohio, not just for motorcycle riders but for pedestrians and other motorists alike.

The introduction of rumble strips at interval distances before stop signs can help prevent further tragedies. We will leave the design, placement, and payment of the rumble strips to the experts, but we are proposing the following: rumble strips be placed at 0.25 miles (roughly 1,320 feet), 1,000 feet, and 500 feet before stop signs. These tactile vibrations and rumbling sounds will alert drivers to the upcoming stop. If we can’t achieve this at all stop signs throughout the state, we should try to start with the rural areas. This is particularly crucial in rural areas, where speed limits may be higher than city roads, and road visibility may be limited. Rumble strips have the potential to save Ohioan lives, providing clear signals that alert drivers and reduce the likelihood of missing crucial stop signs.

Please join this cause to honor Larry and to ensure that no more lives are lost due to overlooked stop signs or distracted drivers. We urge the Ohio Department of Transportation to partner with the necessary State and U.S. Representatives/Senators, Counties and Localities to put this life-saving measure into effect.
