India, with its diverse ecosystem, hosts numerous wetlands - unique habitats that support various species of flora and fauna. Unfortunately, due to a lack of stringent land use policies, these crucial ecosystems are being increasingly affected by rapid urbanization and anthropogenic activities. As reported by the Central Pollution Control Board, India has already lost 38% of its wetlands in just a decade (2005-2015). The ill-effects of losing wetlands are many: disturbing biodiversity, threatening local livelihoods relying on wetlands, and depleting major carbon sinks, thereby aggravating climate change impacts. The need to deal with this concern urgently cannot be overstated.

This petition seeks the formulation and implementation of a strong land use policy that safeguards our wetlands from further degradation. We urge the Government of India to prioritize this issue and recognize the integral role that wetlands play in our environment and the well-being of communities. Adequate legal protection and policy provisions can ensure sustainable land use that harmoniously balances development and conservation.
