The Issue

I am writing to advocate for greater road safety on Hartswood Road by King George's Playing Fields. Our neighbourhood is a wonderful place to live, yet the safety of our residents is at risk due lack of adequate road safety measures.

Hartswood Road  is a primary route for local commuters, especially at school times,  but also a popular area for families visiting King Georges Playing fields. Unfortunately, the current lack of speed reduction measures, and proper signage has led to numerous near-misses and at least 2 serious accidents.

Although there is a pedestrian crossing close to one of the entrances to King Georges, a high number of car drivers are simply not stopping. There is a blind spot when approaching from Brentwood County High School, but there is no excuse for drivers from the other direction and unfortunately we see many drivers from both directions failing to stop at the zebra crossing. The pavement in this location is also very narrow and unsuitable for dogs, prams and kids on cycles, all at the same time.

Traffic surveys have shown that speeding is a recurrent issue on this road, with vehicles often exceeding the 30 mph limit. More than 40% of cars observed were driving above the speed limit, posing a serious threat to all road users. In September 2020 a young person lost their life here and NOW (23rd Sep 2025) another serious accident has happened within 50 metres of the same location.

I am urging Brentwood Council and Essex Highways to implement effective road safety measures on Hartswood Road. Further measures are needed! These could include the installation of large physical speed restrictions, 20 mph limit and better signage.

The safety of our community should be a priority. I believe that with the right measures, we can make Hartswood Road a safer place for everyone.

Please, join me in calling on the Brentwood Council and Essex Highways to take immediate action. Sign this petition to show your support for a safer Hartswood Road.
