As witnesses to a terrifying incident at the NCA cheer Competition, my family and I can attest to the urgent need for improved security measures at such events. We were present at the competition that saw the occurrence of an active shooter situation resulting in injuries, marking a dark day in NCA history due to the absence of adequate security and preventative measures such as metal detectors.

Tragically, incidents of public shootings have escalated over the years, with a reported 418 mass shootings in the US alone in 2019 (Source: Gun Violence Archive). This alarming statistic reflects the pressing need for security enhancements at public events. More specifically, the NCA cheer competitions which see a gathering of thousands of passionate cheerleaders and their supporters.

In the aftermath of the event, survivors and trauma analysts highlighted the absence of visible security and existing safety checks, creating an unsafe environment for all attendees. Given the seriousness of the situation and the heightening risk of violence at public gatherings, we demand that the Varsity implements rigorous security measures, including but not limited to, deploying more security personnel and using metal detectors at every entrance. 

No one should have to fear for their life while partaking in or supporting a sport they love. It's time for the Varsity to prioritize safety and prevent such horrific incidents from recurring.
