My 95-year-old mother, a veteran of past wars, shakes with fear every time a firework pierces the silence of the night. Just as terrifying for her, our family dog whimpers and trembles uncontrollably. This fear is not unique to them. Every year, thousands of animals, children, and war veterans suffer the traumatic and disruptive noises caused by fireworks. These pyrotechnic displays, as loud as bombs, don't just go off late into the night, they cause genuine distress and pose serious safety risks.

Untrained adults and even children are handling these explosives and causing reckless accidents. Fireworks have been let off aimlessly in public areas, thrown at cars, resulting in injuries and widespread distress. In fact, thousands are injured annually due to the misuse of fireworks.

In light of these concerns, it's time to call for restrictions on noisy fireworks. This doesn't have to spell the death of festive light shows. Silent fireworks and displays can create just as much spectacle, without the far-reaching harm and distress.
