Implement 'Resident & Visitor Permit Only' Parking Whitstable

The Issue

We the undersigned petition Canterbury City Council to:

  1. Implement 'Resident & Visitor Permit Only' parking all-year round such as via the Kent County Council(KCC) 'Residents' parking scheme' for the following roads: Acton Road, Stream Walk, Hamilton Road, Albert Street, Warwick Street, Regent Street, and King Edward Street.
  2. To implement these changes immediately through updating parking regulations, installing/updating road signage and ensure enforcement.

This petition advocates for the designation of Acton Road, Stream Walk, Hamilton Road, Albert Street, Warwick Street, Regent Street, and King Edward Street as Resident & Visitor Permit Only zones, aiming to significantly improve the quality of life for the local community. The specific goals of this initiative are:

  • Address Parking Shortages: By restricting these roads to permit holders, we aim to alleviate the chronic lack of parking, ensuring that residents and their visitors have reliable access to parking spaces near their homes.
  • Reduce Non-Local and Commuter Parking: The measure seeks to deter non-residents who currently use these streets for convenience when visiting the town center or commuting via the nearby railway station, encouraging them to use designated car parks instead.
Ease Traffic Congestion: With fewer cars parking and maneuvering on these streets, overall traffic flow will improve, leading to less congestion and a smoother transit experience for residents and local commuters.
  • Improve Community Relations: By eliminating the common source of tension over parking, we anticipate a more harmonious living environment, fostering better relationships among neighbors.
Enhance Pedestrian Access: Less street parking will clear the way for safer and more accessible pedestrian movement, particularly benefiting those with mobility challenges and families with strollers.
  • Promote Use of Car Parks: Encouraging the use of off-street car parks will inject vial funds back into the coimmunity for: Schools, Health & social care and help maintain our streets less cluttered and more visually appealing, contributing to a more pleasant and stress-free community environment.
  • Reduce Noise Pollution: Fewer vehicles and reduced congestion will naturally lead to lower noise levels, contributing to a quieter, more serene neighborhood.
  • Increase Safety for Children: With the roads located near two infant schools and a primary school, reducing vehicle traffic and parking on these streets is critical to enhancing safety for children traveling to and from school.

Through these measures, we aim to transform our neighborhood into a safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable place for all residents, promoting a sustainable and community-focused approach to local living.
