The Issue

Living in Riverside has been a significant part of my life, and as a soon-to-be high school graduate, the prospect of entering adulthood is accompanied by huge challenges, particularly in finding affordable housing. The skyrocketing rents in Riverside make it nearly impossible for young individuals like myself to secure a place to call our own without overwhelming financial strain.

Riverside is experiencing a housing crisis. Housing costs have risen drastically in the past few years, far exceeding the average income increases for many residents. According to recent reports, rent in Riverside has increased by an average of 25% over the last five years alone. With the current median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Riverside now sitting at approximately $1,500 per month, it has become unfeasible for many, especially new graduates, young professionals, and low-income families, to keep up.

Increased rental prices without any form of regulation or control disproportionately affect those with fixed or low incomes. If we're to foster a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, it's crucial that we take steps towards implementing rent controls to ensure fair and affordable housing options.

I propose that the city of Riverside consider the enactment of rent control regulations. Such measures have been successfully implemented in other Californian cities, leading to more stabilized housing markets and enabling residents of all income levels to afford accommodation without sacrificing necessities. Rent control can limit the rate at which rents can increase annually, providing tenants with the security they need.

Joining together as a community, we can advocate for changes that will help alleviate the burden of high rent costs, allowing Riverside to remain a diverse and vibrant place where everyone has access to affordable housing.

Help me, and countless others in Riverside, by signing this petition to push for meaningful rent control measures in our beloved city.
