As a resident of Ohio, I am witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of unchecked rent increases on our families, neighbors, and communities. The absence of a rent cap in our state allows landlords to hike up rents indiscriminately. This greed-driven practice is leading to an unprecedented rise in homelessness and financial distress among ordinary households.

The cost of living has become unbearable for many; we are forced to choose between paying rent or buying food. Our children's education is disrupted as they have to change schools mid-year due to housing instability caused by these exorbitant rents. Cars are being repossessed, utilities switched off - all because landlords prioritize their profits over the welfare of their tenants.

What's more disheartening is that these homes and apartments aren't even updated or renovated adequately; they remain the same $600-$900 per month rentals that landlords now demand $1700 for.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), an average worker in Ohio must earn $15 an hour - nearly double the minimum wage - just to afford a modest two-bedroom rental home at fair market rent.

This situation is untenable and unjustifiable. We need immediate action from our legislators. It's time for Ohio lawmakers to implement a rent cap policy that protects tenants from unregulated increases and ensures affordable housing for all residents.
