Implement Regular Background Checks for All Government Officials

Implement Regular Background Checks for All Government Officials
The Issue
The integrity of our public offices is paramount for the functioning of a fair and honest society. A lack of stringent checks and balances often paves the way for unserviceable individuals to claim, and maintain, positions of power, threatening the very core of democracy. We, therefore, propose regular background checks for all elected and appointed officials, across local, state, and federal positions— from local government members and police forces to state government and federal agencies under law enforcement, including but not limited to congress, house officials, federal judges, and even the president. Every official's eligibility to hold their respective office should be evaluated at intervals, predetermined by their term lengths. This system must be founded on a robust criterion, one that deems a felony conviction as grounds for immediate removal. This policy protects public trust, fosters greater transparency and ensures individuals occupying these offices are both ethical and lawful. Our demand draws on the fact that, presently, 50% of American voters believe that background checks for lawmakers would increase accountability, according to a recent nationwide poll conducted by the New York Times. We urge the government to seriously consider this proposal for the betterment of our society. Sign the petition to endorse regular, stringent background checks for our government officials right from our local councils to the oval office.
