After numerous baby goats were diagnosed with rabies, officials made the difficult decision to euthanize all the goats at the facility, even though only four were confirmed to be infected. As someone deeply connected to these animals, I am urging the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to reconsider their approach to handling rabies cases in petting zoos.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends euthanasia for animals that have been exposed to rabies, but there are viable alternatives that can prevent such a tragic outcome. Rabies vaccines for sheep have been shown to be effective in goats, yet vaccination is not a standard practice. By mandating vaccines for all animals in petting zoos, not only can we curb the spread of rabies, but we can also save countless lives.
Additionally, although current guidelines dismiss antemortem rabies testing for animals, evidence suggests these tests can provide accurate results. Implementing antemortem testing would allow petting zoos to make more informed decisions and avoid unnecessary euthanasia. By working together, we can adopt more compassionate practices while still ensuring public safety.
In Iredell County, the loss of these goats has not only impacted the owner and the patrons, but also highlights a flaw in our current approach to handling zoonotic diseases.
