Implement *Preventative* Safety Measures in Perry Schools and across Iowa

The Issue

Our community in Perry, IA, USA has experienced the unthinkable - a school shooting. This tragedy has shaken us to our core and highlighted the urgent need to protect our children within their educational environment. We are a tenacious community that stands together, not only in times of crisis but also when planning for a safer future. It is time we shift from being reactive to proactive.

We propose the following safety measures be implemented immediately: allow only one secured entry point during school hours; installing weapon detectors at this entrance; enforcing a temporary no-bag policy within school premises; and ensuring police presence on site during operational hours. While we acknowledge that no measure is foolproof, these steps can significantly reduce the risk of such incidents reoccurring.

Updated in response to public request: Some parents and students from Perry are interested in initiating a discussion with the school administration and board. They would like to explore the possibility of a remote/virtual learning option and encourage open, constructive dialogue between both parties.

According to data from Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, there were at least 67 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in 2020 alone. The same source indicates that secure entrances and exits are among the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access and potential threats.

Our plea is simple yet crucial - let's prioritize preventive measures over reactive ones. Let's ensure our children can learn without fear. We ask you to stand with us by signing this petition urging local authorities and school administrators in Perry to implement these comprehensive safety measures immediately.
