Implement Policy for Legal Name Changes on Degree Certificates Post Graduation.

Implement Policy for Legal Name Changes on Degree Certificates Post Graduation.
The Issue
I am a recent graduate from Glasgow Caledonian University. I applied for a full name change in December 2022 prior to my graduation however, due to the backlog as a result of the global pandemic my name change was not implemented until after graduation. Despite informing the university of my pending name change, I was denied the request to have my new name reflected on my degree certificate. This regulation not only affects me but also countless others who, for various reasons, have had to change their names after graduation.
The current policy allows only those who have undergone gender reassignment surgery to amend their names on certificates. This is discriminatory and excludes individuals like myself who may need a name change due to personal or other valid reasons. A degree certificate with a different name can hinder job opportunities and force unnecessary discussions with potential employers.
According to a survey by The Guardian in 2016, approximately 85% of UK graduates believe that universities should allow legal name changes on degree certificates (The Guardian, 2016). It's clear that this issue affects many people and requires immediate attention.
We urge educational institutions worldwide to implement fair policies allowing all individuals with legal documentation of their new names to update their degrees accordingly. Let's ensure that everyone has equal opportunities without being disadvantaged by an outdated system. Please sign this petition if you believe in equality and fairness for all graduates.
