My husband and I relocated to Louisiana from Mississippi in February 2023, bringing along our eight dogs - two parents and their six children. On December 6th, the local sheriff's department arrived at our home for a complaint claiming a few of our dogs were walking through the neighbors yard. They advised they had picture evidence to prove it; however, I had the same picture evidence to disprove the allegations. After proving to the deputy the dogs in question were NOT our dogs the investigation should have ended, or so one would think. It was only the beginning of one of the worst days of my entire life by far. The deputy instead of ending the call,  starts threatening me with imprisonment and the killing of our beloved babies over "inadequate" shelter because we used tarps as temporary housing until we could gather materials for proper dog houses. After an hour and half battle with the original responding officer, his shift Sgt and three other units which arrived with the Sgt, and under duress, I was forced to surrender three of our dogs unwillingly and with protest. Our innocent babies were taken to a local shelter where they were unjustly euthanized only a few days later. Without us given lawful due process, no chances to fix the issues they alleged were adequate to seize our animals and euthanize them. The deputies claimed we had minimal 8 felony counts of animal cruelty charges, all over the "inadequate shelter" issue. They gave me 2 options: 1) I surrender the 3 we had to seperate, he wouldnt arrest me and the other dogs stay, but we also had to be off the property by the end of the night because my parents decided they wanted me, my husband and our dogs gone and that day!! Or 2) I go to jail on a minimum of 8 felony animal cruelty charges, ALL of our sweet babies would be seized and KILLED that day upon arrival to the shelter, and I would be found guilty and go to prison for a very long time.  However No citations were given, No charges filed against us, No arrests made, and they only seized 3 of the 8 dogs we were allegedly being cruel and inhuman to. I completed No official formal surrender papers. The Sgt wrote on a basic piece of notebook type paper that I the surrendered the dogs and I had to sign 3 different times.

To add even more torture to me than he already had, the Sgt then made ME get a leash get each dog one at a time, walk them to the transport truck, pick them up and place them in the cage. When I put the last one in, which was the mom, he slammed the cage door and told me NOT to try and get them back the next day because he was going to make sure they were KILLED upon arrival. Can you imagine the complete torment and guilt I have had to endure since that day? Knowing I basically walked our innocent babies to their deaths. How can I ever forgive myself??

This is not just about us; it's about every pet owner who has been subjected to such unlawful seizures without justification or respect for not only their constitutional rights but the rights of our pets to LIVE. Our pets are not mere property; they are members of our families who do not deserve such cruel fates.

In Louisiana alone, there have been several reported cases of illegal animal seizures by law enforcement and animal control officers (source: Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry). This is a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment rights that protect citizens from unwarranted searches and seizures.

We demand that mandatory penalties be implemented for law enforcement officers and animal control workers who illegally seize animals under threat or intimidation without proper justification. We also urge for a change in legislation recognizing pets as family members rather than property - thus preventing them from being unjustly euthanized.

Please sign this petition if you believe in justice for all pet owners who have suffered similar experiences like ours, so no more innocent lives will be lost due to abuse of power by those meant to uphold the law.
