Implement Penalties for Hitting Family Pets with Vehicles

The Issue

On March 29th, my beloved family dog became the victim of a hit and run incident. As the family grapples with the aftermath, faced with veterinary bills and emotional distress, it is clear that the current system does not adequately protect our companion animals from similar situations. According to the Pet Injury Law Association, currently in many states, pets are considered personal property, with no additional consequences for drivers who hit them and leave the scene without reporting it. This must change. Injured pets need treatment which can be costly; their owners should not be left to bear these costs alone if they are not at fault. We need to hold individuals accountable for their actions. It's not just about reimbursing veterinary bills - it's about recognizing that pets are more than 'property' - they're family. The individual who hit our dog was allowed to drive away with no consequences - this is an issue that needs to be addressed. We propose legislation that imposes fines against those who hit family pets with their vehicles and leave the scene, without reporting it. We also propose laws to ensure that owners are compensated for veterinarian bills and associated costs. Help us advocate for the justice our pets deserve by supporting this crucial change.
