As a local resident, teacher, and parent, I have witnessed first-hand the hazards that pedestrians and cyclists face on Green Lane and Francis Ave in New Greens, St Albans. Cars, vans & buses, are continually risking the lives of those around them with their reckless driving, mounting pavements and ignoring the safety of students, parents and children.
On numerous occasions, I have seen my students have near-miss accidents. I have seen terrified parents snatching their children out of the way of pavement mounting cars. I have been approached by a bus driving on the pavement, with my 9-year-old daughter walking right in its path. It's unbelievably dangerous to cross Green Lane at 8.30am. It is hard for an adult to see if it’s safe to cross beyond a row of impatient drivers let alone for a child.
These roads are critical pathways for children walking to multiple local schools, as well as being a part of the St Albans Cycle Route. Our community shouldn't have to fear for their lives while commuting on foot or by cycle.
This is why I urge authorities to create safe and secure crossings for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing major risks in these busy areas. Let's transform Green Lane and Francis Ave into safe, efficient roads that our community deserves. Prevent accidents, protect our children, and let's make our roads a safe place for everyone. Please sign this petition and join us in making these crucial changes for our community.
