The Issue

As someone deeply affected by the ongoing global crisis of displaced families, I am moved to action. Every day, countless civilians - particularly women and children - are killed in conflicts that could be prevented or resolved peacefully. This is a stark reminder that we cannot call ourselves civilised until this ends.

It is time for countries at the United Nations (U.N.) and U.N. Security Council to take decisive action towards creating a means of peaceful resolution to conflicts which includes rapid settlement for refugees. According to UNHCR, there were nearly 79.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide at the end of 2019 (UNHCR Global Trends Report). This number has likely increased due to ongoing conflicts around the world.

The creation of a comprehensive strategy for peaceful conflict resolution will not only save lives but also provide stability for those who have been forced from their homes due to these conflicts. The implementation of rapid settlement programs for refugees will ensure they are provided with safe havens while long-term solutions are sought.

We urge our leaders in the U.N., especially those on the Security Council, to prioritize peace over politics and human lives over territorial gains. Let us work together towards a world where every individual has a safe place they can call home.
