The Issue

My children, along with many others, are currently attending Hillside Middle School, where there has been a disturbing cockroach infestation. This has not only made attending classes uncomfortable but poses significant health risks, particularly to children with asthma and other respiratory concerns. Disturbingly, there have been numerous reports of children experiencing cockroaches falling on them during class and in the hallways.

I worry every day about the potential hazards my children face at school and the possibility of bringing home cockroach eggs or even live insects, which could lead to an infestation at home—a situation that the school district has clearly stated they will not cover for fumigation.

Given these health risks and sanitation issues, it is imperative that immediate action be taken. I propose transitioning to online classes until the school thoroughly eradicates the cockroach problem. This solution is both realistic and essential to ensure that students are provided with a safe and conducive learning environment. By temporarily holding classes online, we prioritize the health and safety of all students and staff while the necessary pest control measures are undertaken.

The safety of our children should always come first. No child should be exposed to such unpleasant and unhealthy conditions in what should be a secure place for learning and growth.

Please sign this petition to urge the Hillside Middle School administration and relevant district authorities to transition to online learning until they manage to control and eliminate this severe cockroach infestation.
