Implement Noise Control Measures and Speed Bumps at Local School in Middle Sackville
The Issue
I am a resident of Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia, living across the parking lot of Millwood High School. The peace of my home, especially the sleep of my infant child, is frequently disturbed by teenagers making loud noises and driving their cars loudly around the school's parking lot at night. Throughout the day kids under legal age spend time skipping classes, smoking, littering behind our houses, and listening to loud music. We also have evidence of left behind unattended fire in the place of this gatherings. This issue is not only affecting our family's quality of life but also raises safety concerns.
In Canada, noise pollution has been recognized as a public health issue that can lead to stress-related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss and sleep disruption (source: Health Canada). It is crucial for us to address this problem in our community.
Additionally, there have been continuous instances where these teenagers drive at high speeds around the area. This reckless behavior poses a significant risk to pedestrians and other drivers alike. Neighbours raised their concerns to local police officers without any visible progress. According to Transport Canada statistics from 2019 on road safety in Canada - speed was a contributing factor in 27% of fatal accidents and 19% of those causing injury (source: Transport Canada).
We are calling on the local school administration and our councillor Lisa Blackburn to take immediate action by implementing noise control measures during non-school hours, closing school gates after classes are over, and installing speed bumps on roads surrounding the school premises. These steps will not only ensure peace for residents but also enhance road safety within our community.
