The Escalating Crime Crisis in Our Community: Urgent Action Required

As a resident of this community, I, like many others, live in a constant state of fear. Each night, I go to bed uncertain of what dangers may unfold while we are most vulnerable. Crime has reached an unacceptable level, leaving residents feeling unsafe in their own homes. This situation is not just concerning—it is outrageous.

Despite our efforts to seek help, police response times are often inadequate in preventing or stopping criminal activity. The reality is that crime is escalating at an alarming rate, and the measures currently in place are failing to protect us.

Immediate action is required to address this crisis. One of the most effective deterrents to crime is the introduction of night-time security patrols. A visible security presence would not only help prevent criminal activity but also provide residents with the peace of mind they desperately need.

Recent statistics paint a dire picture of the crime surge in Victoria:

• Criminal incidents increased by 18.7% in 2024, with 456,453 incidents recorded, up from 384,568 the previous year.

• Youth crime has spiralled out of control, with gangs of teenagers armed with machetes terrorising residents in violent home invasions and car thefts.

• Break-ins have become disturbingly common, leaving families fearing for their safety in their own homes.

• Operation Trinity, a large-scale police campaign targeting serious youth offenders, consumed 140,000 police hours and 1,000 helicopter hours, resulting in 688 arrests over 1,642 incidents—many involving aggravated burglaries and carjackings.

• Family violence incidents surpassed 100,000 in a single year, contributing to a 10.9% increase in overall crime rates.

These statistics are alarming and underscore the urgent need for stronger security measures. We cannot allow crime to define our community. It is time for decisive action.

By signing this petition, we can urge our local government to prioritise our safety and implement night-time security patrols. Together, we can reclaim our right to feel safe in our own homes.
