The Issue

As a multiethnic individual, I have observed a significant gap in our social discourse and education system. Our schools' curricula often overlook the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, despite the fact that the number of multiethnic people has tripled in the United States over the past decade. This growth is due to changes in census gathering methods that now allow for this designation, as well as increased mobility and population growth.

In Washington State alone, we have seen an increase in diversity that mirrors these national trends. Yet our educational institutions still lack comprehensive programs to celebrate this diversity and educate students about it. This is why I am proposing that every January be designated as Multi-Ethnic Awareness Month in Washington State, much in the same way as other history and heritage months.

This month would serve not only to recognize but also to educate students about various ethnic groups' contributions to our society's fabric. It would complement existing history and awareness months on the academic calendar by providing a more inclusive perspective on our shared history.

By implementing this change, we can foster greater understanding among students of different backgrounds and promote inclusivity within our schools. Let us take action now for a more equitable future - sign this petition today!
