I am writing this petition out of deep personal concern for the safety of my loved ones who attend schools in Texas. With the increasing reports of gun incidents across the state, each day brings with it a wave of anxiety and fear for parents, students, and educators alike. My family, like countless others, deserves to feel secure in an environment where education, not protection, is the primary focus. It should be in our power to take immediate and effective steps to ensure our children's safety.

The presence of metal detectors in all Texas high schools and selected middle schools could make a significant difference in preventing potential tragedies. Metal detectors are a proactive measure to deter and detect weapons, thus enhancing the safety of students and staff. Texas has unfortunately witnessed multiple instances in the past decade where school violence has ended in tragedy. According to data from Education Week, in the US alone, there have been 30 school shootings resulting in injury or death in 2022. While not all weapons can be detected with current measures, metal detectors serve as an initial line of defense to help mitigate these risks.

The implementation of metal detectors is not a new or radical idea. Cities like New York have successfully integrated such systems as part of comprehensive school safety strategies. A 2010 study by the National Institute of Justice found that 70% of New York City public schools reported fewer violent incidents after installing metal detectors. Furthermore, according to the New York Times, schools with metal detectors have seen not only a decrease in weapon-related incidents but also an increased sense of safety amongst students and staff.

I acknowledge that the installation of metal detectors requires investments in costs and training. However, the potential to save lives and avert tragedies should far outweigh the financial considerations. By placing metal detectors at entrances, together with strategic surveillance, training of staff, and clear safety protocols, we can create a multi-faceted approach to safety that schools desperately need.

This is not just an investment in security, but one in the future of our children—ensuring they are able to learn and grow in peace. Let's make it a priority to shield our classrooms from harm and ensure a safe space for education to flourish.

I urge the Texas State Education Agency and local school districts to take immediate action and prioritize our children's safety by implementing metal detectors in all high schools and select middle schools across Texas. Let's protect our children by preventing violence before it happens.
