Implement Measures to Mitigate Speeding and Reckless Driving in Meyer Park

The Issue

Our small community, beautifully positioned along Canal road through East 2nd Avenue, prides itself on being a peaceful and friendly place, where outdoors is the heart of our lifestyle. Residents are often seen biking, walking, and children playing at ease. However, the recent rerouting of traffic from Canal road to East 2nd Avenue threatens our tranquility and safety. Over time, our residence has become a shortcut for speed-loving drivers, turning East 22nd Avenue into a virtual drag-strip. Vehicles excessively speed and drive recklessly, treating all Meyer Park roads, as their race track with little regard for our community's safety.

This alarming circumstance calls for the city to take immediate action. Instituting blinking speed limit signs and speed bumps, combined with an increased police presence, will deter these reckless behaviors. Studies show that traffic calming measures, like speed bumps, can reduce vehicle speeds by about 40% (source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

Our plea for a safer traffic route isn't simply about reducing noise and nuisance, but about protecting lives - the lives of our biking lovers, of our outdoor enthusiasts, and most importantly, of our children who call Meyer Park home. Time is of the essence to avoid a potential tragedy. We implore you to share this urgency with us and join our cause. All it takes is a signature to amplify our voices against irresponsible driving in our community. Together, we can reclaim our home from speed and danger. Please, sign this petition. Please share with your neighbors.
