Disparities in the treatment of disabled individuals by police forces are an unfortunate and widespread issue. Notably, in Marion, we believe that police officers will greatly benefit from mandatory training on how to effectively handle situations involving disabled people. With disabled individuals making up nearly 12% of the population [Source: CDC], the need for this awareness is not only a matter of individual rights but also a matter of community safety and public service. By equipping our police force with the necessary understanding, empathy, and skills, we can hope to create a safer, more egalitarian society where every citizen is treated with due respect and understanding. This training can also bring changes in understanding disability rights laws, thus reducing the risk of litigation on the police department due to inability to handle such individual-related situations.
