*The global standard we’re missing:*
80+ countries including the UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand already made stunning mandatory. It’s considered the bare minimum for humane slaughter globally. SA is behind.

*The reality in SA abattoirs:*
Some abattoirs stun voluntarily. Many don’t. Without a law, there’s no guarantee. Thousands of animals per day die in fear because the law doesn’t protect them.

*Emotional well-being impact*

*For the animals:*
This is about their final 60 seconds alive. Without stunning, animals experience:

1. *Extreme fear* – They smell blood, hear screams, and panic before death

2. *Pain* – Conscious during the cut and while bleeding out

3. *Distress* – Fight, thrash, and suffer. Brain scans show this is trauma

Stunning = instant unconsciousness. No fear. No pain. Just sleep before death. It gives them dignity in their final moment.

*For us, the humans:*

1. *Abattoir workers*: Studies show workers in non-stun slaughter have higher PTSD, depression, and substance abuse. Hearing conscious animals scream daily damages people. Stunning protects workers too.

2. *Citizens*: Most South Africans don’t want animals to suffer. 73% of SA consumers said animal welfare matters in a 2023 survey. But right now our law doesn’t match our values. That creates moral distress.

3. *Your team*: Fighting for this gives people hope + purpose. Taking action on suffering is proven to reduce helplessness and anxiety. You’re protecting animals AND your community’s emotional health.

*Bottom line*: This law isn’t about vegan vs meat. It’s about _how_ we die. Conscious or unconscious. Terrified or at peace.

It is only fair, then, that we treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve. Ensuring that farm animals do not endure cruelty, fear, and unnecessary pain is an ethical obligation that we, as a society, cannot shy away from.

In South Africa, the current regulations around the slaughter of farm animals fall short of ensuring humane treatment. Pre-slaughter stunning, a practice endorsed by welfare organizations globally, is not mandatory. This process, when properly implemented, renders animals unconscious before they are slaughtered, significantly reducing their suffering.

According to studies by the American Veterinary Medical Association and the European Food Safety Authority, pre-slaughter stunning minimizes pain and distress, ensures a more humane slaughter, and, in many cases, improves the quality of the meat. The World Organization for Animal Health also supports this practice as a standard for animal welfare.

Currently, South Africa lags behind many countries where pre-slaughter stunning is a legal requirement. Countries such as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand have enshrined these practices in their laws, establishing a benchmark that balances animal welfare with agricultural practices.

Implementing mandatory pre-slaughter stunning is not without challenges, but the benefits far outweigh the obstacles. Education and training for workers, adjustments in processing facilities, and oversight can facilitate this transition effectively. Moreover, promoting awareness among consumers and producers alike can drive industry standards towards more humane practices.
