The continual threat of school shootings is terrifying for both students and their families. Having our schools targeted by active shooters is becoming an all-too-familiar and horrific narrative. As someone who firmly believes in the power of safety measures, I am calling for all schools to be required to put in place metal detectors. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, during the 2015-16 school year, 94% of public schools in the U.S. reported that they controlled access to school buildings by locking or monitoring doors during school hours. However, only 4.5% reported using metal detectors. Metal detectors can act as a first line of defense, preventing dangerous instruments from entering our schools. By requiring this safety standard across the board, we can provide an additional layer of protection for our children. I am urging policy makers to make a change that can potentially save lives. Every child deserves to study in an environment that is safe from the threat of harm.
