As a parent of young children attending school in Georgia, I cannot stress enough the importance of their safety. Unfortunately, our children are exposed to potential harm every single day when they step foot into their learning institutions. A step towards ensuring their safety is the implementation of metal detectors in all schools. This is not a proposal born out of paranoia, but a measure backed by real and worrisome statistics. According to the National Institute of Justice, schools remain a site of targeted shootings, and this threat is real and strong within our Georgia community. The implementation of metal detectors could act as a deterrent and possibly minimize the occurrence of weapon-related violence in schools. It's a small step in the big picture of safety, but a crucial one. We owe it to our children, to give them an environment where they feel protected, and where their focus can be solely on learning and growing.
