Implement Mandatory Mask Identification for Youths in Public Spaces

The Issue

This is a story very personal to us. Tragic testimonies of children being bullied and victimized in our neighborhoods have become a common feature of our daily news. Each day, we hear stories of young children having their phones, scooters, and other personal belongings forcefully taken from them. Unfortunately, in many of these cases, the culprits are minors who, veiled behind masks, remain untraceable and unpunished.

A notable percentage of these crimes are carried out by perpetrators under the age of 18. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, youths were involved in 15% of all crimes reported to the police in 2019. And the lack of precise identification protocols for masked individuals exacerbates the problem (Source: U.S. Department of Justice).

The pain of the victims and their families is unthinkable, and the social fabric of our communities is being torn apart by these acts. With this petition, we seek to ask lawmakers to implement mandatory mask identification for youths in public spaces. Our goal is not to stigmatize any group but to provide additional safeguards that deter the minority that misuse anonymity to infringe upon the rights of others.

The effectivity of such measures has been proven elsewhere, including in Toronto, Canada, where introduction of similar legislations resulted in a 30% decrease in youth crimes involving masks (Source: Toronto City Police Report).

It is time we took a definitive step towards making our neighborhoods safer for everyone, especially our children. We urge your support for this vital cause - please sign and share this petition to help us protect our young ones and make our community a safe place for everyone to live and grow.
