Implement Mandatory Driving Tests for Individuals Aged 65 and Over
The Issue
My 7-year-old son and I were victims of a nightmarish traffic accident on October 1st, 2024. On an ordinary day, our lives were turned upside down when an 86-year-old woman struck our car head-on. My son endured the terrifying ordeal of two hip fractures and a broken tailbone. My injuries were so severe that I required lifeflight transport to the ER, where I found out I sustained six fractures and suffered from brain fog and memory loss. The aftermath involved three harrowing months in a wheelchair, with my son also bound to a wheelchair for seven weeks. This heart-wrenching episode of my life serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by elderly drivers.
We are not alone in this experience. According to the US Census Bureau, by 2030, one in every five drivers in the US will be over the age of 65, which increases the chances of such devastating accidents. Therefore, we demand the government to implement mandatory driving tests, eye exams, and primary care exams for individuals aged 65 and over every two years. This strategy would evaluate whether these drivers can operate vehicles safely.
In case of any diagnosed issues affecting their ability to drive, their licenses should be temporarily suspended until they adequately address these issues. This measure ensures that our roads remain safe for all users - whether they are drivers, passengers, or pedestrians. Your support can prevent another life-changing event similar to mine from happening again. Sign this petition to mandate periodic driving tests for those aged 65 and above.
