The Issue

Growing up, I faced numerous challenges that fueled my reckless behavior. I often found myself lost, chasing drugs, skipping school, and feeling isolated, unsure of where to turn for help. Sadly, I lacked a supportive guiding hand, which if available, could have drastically altered my path and potentially circumvented some of the troubles I endured. Recognizing the transformative potential of guidance and support, I firmly believe that integrating mandatory counseling sessions in public schools could have a significant, positive impact on children's lives.

Currently, there are countless students who quietly suffer similar battles. Without proper intervention, these struggles can escalate, affecting their education, mental health, and future success. The mental demands on young minds today are immense—ranging from academic pressures to personal and home challenges. Many children do not have safe spaces to talk about these issues or to seek advice. Therefore, I am urging all public schools to implement a program requiring students to participate in counseling sessions for at least one hour every two weeks.

Counseling sessions tailored for middle and high school students can address school-related concerns, personal and mental health issues, or even home environments. These guided sessions provide a sanctuary where students can receive the assistance they need to navigate complex emotions and challenges. Moreover, early intervention can identify potential issues before they require more serious interventions, crafting a pathway to both emotional and academic success.

Research shows that early counseling intervention has significant benefits: enhancements in students’ academic performance, better emotional regulation, and healthier peer and authority relationships. According to the American School Counselor Association, effective school counseling can significantly increase student academic performance and create healthier school environments. Implementation on a broad scale could raise the national academic standing while simultaneously improving the mental health of countless students.

Implementing these hourly bi-weekly sessions might require initial funding and restructuring of school programs, yet the long-term benefits far outweigh the start-up costs. This proactive approach ensures that every child, regardless of their background, receives the support they need, fostering a future generation that is well-adapted, resilient, and prepared to succeed.
