Implement Mandatory Apprenticeship for Licensed Tattoo Artists

The Issue

I am an artist and lover of tattooing, an art form that deserves respect and integrity. Tattooing, like other professions, requires an in-depth knowledge and experience, not merely a fee and license. In St Lucie county, however, becoming a licensed tattoo artist is as easy as paying a fee. This lack of requirement for actual training and experience belittles the artistry involved, and furthermore, may be detrimental to the safety and health of the recipients of this art.

Tattooing is much more than just drawing on the skin. It requires not only artistic skills but also knowledge about skin and a high degree of sanitary understanding. Like nurses who have to go through extensive training before they can perform any medical procedures, individuals who wish to become tattoo artists should also undergo extensive education and training.

This is why I urge for the requirement of a verifiable two-year apprenticeship for all licensed tattoo artists, and a 5-year work experience for those applying for an establishment license. This is to include permanent make up artist. With this it ensures that individuals who pursue this profession are not only artists but also informed practitioners who prioritize their client's health and safety, similar to those who work in the medical field.

It is not just about preserving the integrity of the art, it's also about ensuring that those who choose to wear this art on their skin are in safe, capable, and well-trained hands.

Please sign this petition to support the improvement of standards in tattoo artistry. Together we can ensure that every stroke of the needle is not only an expression of beauty but also an act of responsibility.
