My neighbor was struck by an e-bike on the sidewalk at an alarming speed, knocking her over and leading to a fractured jaw and arm. In addition to this, I have personally witnessed two dogs struck by over-speeding e-bikes on the sidewalk. These experiences have left me with a strong resolve to ensure the safety of all pedestrians.

Across the United States, E-bike-related accidents have significantly increased, with major cities like New York experiencing a 35% increase in related accidents in the last three years. (source: NYC Department of Transportation) Mandatory license plates for e-bikes can help enforce accountability, decrease incidents of reckless driving, and increase overall safety for the public. A large part of the problem is the conflicting laws governing the use of e-bikes, and while e-bikes are banned from using sidewalk in many cities, enforcement is non existent, allowing a dangerous practice to persist (source: National Association of City Transportation Officials). 

The alarming rate of e-bike related accidents, especially on sidewalks, clearly shows there's an immediate need for regulations to protect the safety of pedestrians and all road users. Let us lobby for change. We urge the local authorities to implement mandatory license plates for e-bikes, as well as strictly enforce laws prohibiting their use on sidewalks.
