Dear Supporter,
I’m writing to thank you for joining our call for the implementation of legislation and regulations on e-bikes and e-scooters and to ask for you to help us put an end to tragic accidents like Sofia's by writing to your MP to make them aware of this issue.
As you will know, the number of e-bike and e-scooter fires has quadrupled since 2020, and in London, it has been identified as the fastest growing fire trend. We are seeking your support to demonstrate to the Government that this issue has a high level of public backing.
Electrical Safety First, a charity which seeks to reduce the number of electrical deaths in the home, has developed a Safety Bill that Yvonne Fovargue MP, is reading in Parliament on Wednesday, 5 June 2024. The proposed Bill would legislate for tougher safety checks on the lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and e-scooters; enhancing safe use, charging, and storage practices, as well as ensuring safe disposal practices. Further information on the Safety Bill can be found here.
Yvonne Fovargue MP has also submitted an Early Day Motion on this issue, which MPs can sign to urge the Government to find time for this Bill to be debated in order to prevent further deaths and injuries working from the explosions caused by e-scooter and e-bike batteries.
The Safety Bill currently has the support of a number of politicians and 47 industry organisations, including bicycle manufacturers, housing associations and fire services.
If you would like to support this campaign further, you can write to your local MP, expressing concern about the issue and asking for them to sign Yvonne Fovargue’s Early Day Motion.
You can use this website to check who your MP is and to write to them. You can also use this tool on Electrical Safety First’s website to check if there have been any e-bike fires in your constituency, which you can also highlight in writing to them.
Your continued support is vital in ensuring the safety of our communities alike. Together, we can put an end to these avoidable fires and save lives.
Thank you once again for your support.
Kind regards,
Alda
