Implement Legal Consequences for Roommate Abuse

The Issue

Home should never feel like a prison or a place you dread returning to. I am one of many who have suffered from roommate abuse. I've had several roommates take advantage of me, making my living conditions unbearable. The psychological torment was so severe that I was forced to leave places that I had invested everything into. These individuals faced no repercussions for their actions and the distress they inflicted upon others.

Roommate abuse is a silent epidemic, often overlooked in favor of spousal or domestic violence laws. However, it is just as damaging and prevalent. According to a study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), 32% of college students reported experiencing some form of roommate abuse, be it physical or psychological.

The law protects us from abusive spouses and family members; why should it not protect us from abusive roommates? If there are laws for spousal abuse and domestic violence, there should also be consequences for those who take advantage of and abuse platonic roommates.

We need legal measures in place to deter potential abusers and provide justice to victims like myself who have been forced out of their homes due to the actions of their supposed 'roommates'. Let's urge our lawmakers to recognize this issue and implement necessary changes in our legal system.

Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves a safe living environment free from fear and intimidation.
