Implement Laws Requiring Drivers to Stop and Report After Hitting Cats

The Issue

My mother's pet cat was tragically hit by a vehicle and abandoned on the road, left to suffer in the pouring rain. The driver responsible did not even have the decency to stop or attempt to get help. This event not only caused emotional distress, there are people out there that end up with unexpected financial strain due to veterinary expenses due to this while the driver doesn't need to worry after causing the problem. As petitions, stories, and feelings like ours pour forth, it becomes clear that this issue is bigger than just us. It is the helpless meows of pets, the silent tears of their owners, and the glaring oversight of current legal regulations. On average, it is estimated cats are reported hit at an alarming rate of 230,000 times a year in the UK, likely vastly underestimating the true number considering the lack of mandatory reporting (RSPCA, 2021). As mainly domestic animals, cats are family members entitled to the same basic respect and care as any other. It is high time our laws reflect this reality. As such, we demand the implementation of laws making it compulsory for drivers to stop and report accidents involving cats. Nobody should be able to harm a beloved pet and simply drive away. Help us deter this unjust behavior and protect our feline friends. Please, sign and share this petition.
