The Issue

As someone who has been deeply involved in dog rescue for over a decade, I've witnessed firsthand the stark difference that proper screening in the adoption process can make. When families are screened, animals find homes where they are safe, loved, and well-cared for. Unfortunately, the absence of stringent regulations in local animal shelters often leads to heartbreaking consequences, including neglect, cruelty, and even the death of innocent animals.

The current situation in Wake County reveals significant gaps in how shelters are able to screen potential adopters. Due to lax laws, shelters often lack the authority to deny adoptions even when they suspect that the new environment may not be suitable. This oversight has led to tragedies, such as the case of Jessica Powell and Desiree Williams. They managed to adopt several large dogs only to confine them in a small apartment, leading to one dog's death by starvation and leaving others severely emaciated.

The need for reform in Wake County’s animal adoption policies cannot be overstated. Ensuring safe, suitable homes for animals begins with effective screening and monitoring processes. By implementing stricter adoption checks, we can prevent these tragedies and drastically improve the welfare of animals being adopted from our local shelters. Let’s give more power to the shelters. They know these animals and what they need.

Let's show our commitment to protecting animals in our community by demanding that Wake County takes action. Sign this petition to urge local authorities to introduce and enforce these necessary regulations. Together, we can make a meaningful change for the welfare of our cherished animals.
