The Issue

Too many animals die at the Wichita animal shelter without a fair chance of finding a home. These innocent creatures are confined day after day, often staring at blank walls due to the lack of proper enrichment and opportunities to leave their kennels. This is not the kind of care our community should be providing to its voiceless inhabitants.

Currently, the shelter's practices contribute to a tragic number of animals being euthanized instead of being adopted. Studies show that shelters can significantly reduce euthanasia rates through improved enrichment activities, volunteer involvement, and adoption events. In cities where shelters have adopted comprehensive care and enrichment programs, there has been a noted increase in adoption rates and a significant decrease in stress-related behaviors among animals.

Wichita is a community that cares about its animals, and it's time we reflect this in our shelter practices. We can improve the lives of these animals by expanding volunteer initiatives, enhancing animal interaction, and organizing more adoption drives. Encouraging local businesses to partner for sponsorships and donations can also provide much-needed resources.

The city government and the people responsible for animal control have the power and the responsibility to make these changes. Let's urge them to adopt humane policies that prioritize animal care and enrichment, helping these animals find loving homes. Please sign this petition to show your support for implementing positive reforms in the Wichita animal shelter and animal control system.
