Implement Hourly Pay for Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes and DoorDash Drivers in Ontario

Implement Hourly Pay for Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes and DoorDash Drivers in Ontario

The Issue

My name is unknown but I am a part-time Uber driver in Ontario. Over the past two years, I've witnessed a drastic, negative change in our pay structure. While driving for these food delivery apps offers flexible work hours, it's clear that per-delivery pay rates aren't enough to cover our needs or reflect the effort involved. This issue has become deeply personal for me and significantly impacts lives of thousands of delivery drivers who, like me, depend on this income.

In British Columbia, Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes and DoorDash have all started paying their drivers an hourly wage - an encouraging move towards fairer compensation. However, in Ontario we are still stuck with unstable, unpredictable incomes. Therefore, we call for a similar change to be enacted here.

It is noteworthy that data from Ryerson University in 2020 showed that 50% of food delivery workers in Toronto earn less than $15 per hour before expenses, far less than the province’s average minimum wage (source: Ryerson University). This shows the significant disparity due to the non-standard pay structure of these companies.

We are asking for these companies to institute an hourly pay system in Ontario that reflects the standard minimum wage or higher, adjusted for the demands of this kind of work. This change would ensure a stable, fair income for all delivery drivers, and recognition for the valuable service they offer to the community.

I appeal to you, sign this petition to stand with us. Stand for fair pay and improved working conditions for all delivery app drivers in Ontario. Let's spur change, one signature at a time.
