This petition is born out of a personal, heart-wrenching experience. My cousin's 18-month-old boy stopped eating, lost weight and became increasingly lethargic. Despite multiple visits to the GP and contacting her health visitor, she could only secure an appointment a month later. It was only after visiting Sheffield Children's A&E that her little boy was diagnosed with a serious, life threatening, congenital heart condition which had caused significant damage to his heart and lungs. He required urgent open heart surgery to save his life. 

This story underscores the urgent need for readily accessible healthcare services for infants in Barnsley, UK. The current system failed to provide timely assistance when it was most needed - this must change.

We are calling on our local authorities to implement health visitor led drop-in clinics for weighing babies and infants in Barnsley. These clinics will provide immediate access to healthcare professionals who can monitor children's growth and development regularly, potentially identifying any health issues at an early stage.

According to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), regular monitoring of children’s growth is crucial as it can help detect serious conditions such as malnutrition or underlying diseases like congenital heart disease early on (RCPCH).

The implementation of these drop-in clinics will not only ensure that all children receive the necessary attention they require but also relieve parents from unnecessary stress while waiting for scheduled appointments.
