My daughter, Jessica, was violently murdered in her boyfriend's home at the tender age of 27. She left behind a beautiful daughter and a family who loved her dearly. The system failed my Jessica miserably; we need change to the laws so that people can feel safe in their own homes.

Violent crimes are an epidemic that affects us all, with over 1.2 million violent crimes reported in the United States alone each year (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program). Yet, it seems there is little accountability for these actions under current legislation.

If we as a community deem it necessary to put down an animal if it attacks, shouldn't we apply similar principles to mankind? The harsher the penalties are for violent crimes, the more likely potential offenders may think twice before committing such atrocities.

We propose longer-term sentences and harsher penalties for those convicted of violent crimes. This will not only serve as a deterrent but also ensure justice is served appropriately. It's time our legal system prioritized victims' rights over criminals'.
