Implement front-of-package labelling in India immediately
The Issue
As a nutritionist for the past 25 years, I've witnessed a dramatic transformation in India's food landscape. In less than 15 years, we've shifted from traditional dietary practices to a culture dominated by fast food, packaged foods and around-the-clock delivery services. This seismic change has had dire consequences; India now holds the unenviable title of the Diabetes Capital of the World. Obesity rates and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are skyrocketing at alarming rates. Yet, despite these grave circumstances, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) delays implementing front-of-package labelling, which critically empowers consumers to make informed dietary choices.
Our right to know what we're consuming is enshrined in Article 21—the Right to Health—of the Indian Constitution. With this right, we must demand transparency that enables healthier choices, especially given the aggressive marketing of high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods even in rural areas. It's disconcerting to see that products like fried high salt potato chips are more readily available and affordable than nutritious options such as millets and fresh fruits.
The urgency of front-of-package labelling cannot be overstated. According to the World Health Organization, front-of-package labels have been effective in helping consumers reduce their intake of sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats, thereby playing a crucial role in combating obesity and related diseases. Countries around the world, including Brazil, Chile, and Canada, have successfully implemented such labelling systems, showing demonstrable benefits in public health.
Nutritionists, health advocates, and concerned citizens are standing firm, demanding immediate action. We need a system that categorically outlines the nutritional content of food products in a clear and understandable way. This will decisively aid in a much-needed shift towards health consciousness across India.
Now is the time for the FSSAI to step up and fulfil their mandate to safeguard public health. Delay is not just a regulatory lapse—it's a denial of our fundamental rights. We call upon the FSSAI to promptly introduce and enforce mandatory front-of-package nutrition labelling regulations. This actionable step will empower millions of Indians to make better dietary choices and lead healthier lives.
Join me in urging the FSSAI to prioritize public health and implement front-of-package labelling without further delay. Sign this petition to protect our right to health.
