As a student at Trevor G. Browne, part of the Phoenix Union District, I personally feel the strain of the traditional five day school week. With more and more academic pressure and high expectations for participating in extracurricular activities, it’s becoming challenging to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Transitioning to a four day school week could provide relief to this stressor. Studies have found that districts transitioning to a four day week have seen increases in student engagement and “morale”, as well as decreases in students absence. (source: National Education Association). Not only would Fridays off provide students with much-needed rest time, but it could also allow opportunities for extracurricular learnings and time for students to broaden their horizons. Our community’s mental wellness and academic performance could greatly benefit from this adjustment. Let’s give our community a chance to strive for success on a schedule that respects our needs for rest and recreation. I urge you to sign this petition to implement Four-Day School Weeks in Phoenix Union District.
