The danger that pedestrians face while crossing roads in our town is personal to me. Both my aunt and my brother were unfortunate victims, hit by vehicles as pedestrians. Additionally, an alarming number of pedestrian versus motor vehicle accidents have occurred in our town, many of them causing permanent disability or, tragically, taking away lives. 

Our town's pedestrian safety needs immediate improvements. Effective solutions like installing flashing crosswalks and delayed traffic lights at all major crossings can significantly lower the risk of accidents. These measures have been proven effective in other areas. According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, flashing crosswalks can decrease pedestrian crashes by 47% and delayed traffic lights by an additional 56% (IIHS, 2018).

This change is not just about statistics; it's about real lives—people like my aunt and my brother and too many others whose lives have been irrevocably changed because of preventable accidents. I urge our town council to consider these necessary safety improvements so that future accidents can be avoided and our beloved town made safer.
